The weather was cold with periods of heavy rain but that did not dampen the spirit of friendship in Lions Valley Park on Saturday May 14th! This was the site of the 2nd annual Defeat Depression Walk in support of the Distress Centre.
Over 100 participants; family, friends, neighbours, volunteers and pets gathered in the early morning to support community, the reduction of stigma and better support for mental health. Participants enjoyed some Yoga followed by a scenic 5km walk through the trails.
Distress Centre has provided listening support through befriending services to anyone who needs someone to talk to for over 42 years and currently facilitates over 1,200 conversations each month, helping people to better cope with emotional stress, loneliness, isolation andcreating safety for those in crisis.
Many thanks go out to community event sponsors: Jennifer Palozzi - Sales Representative Forest Hill Realty, Metro, Sobeys, Starbucks, Maple Lodge Farms, Voortman Cookies, LifeSourceWater, Gear Music, Stephenson’s Rental and community partners represented by CMHA – Canadian Mental Health Association of Halton, United Way of Oakville and Distress Centre North Halton.
The event raised 128% of the goal of $25,000, for over $32,000 in support of our local Distress Centre and the Mood Disorders Society - proof that our community supports non- judgemental conversations around mental well being and the services provided by community organizations such as Distress Centre.
In 2016 Distress Centre in Halton will expand technology and services across the region allowing more people to access support.
